Sunny qualifying in sunny Imola

Esther Kienapfel

The qualifying in Imola was set to be thrilling from the start. Ferrari and McLaren looked strong the entire weekend and Mercedes also showed promising results.

In the first round of qualifying Alpine surprised with both cars making it into Q2, but even more surprising was Haas’s Hulkenberg making it to P3 in Q1.

The qualifying brought bad news too. The balance still doesn’t seem to be right for Aston Martin and Alonso. Alonso will start tomorrow’s race in p19, only Sargeant behind him. Magnussen will start on p18, Zhou on p17 and Bottas on p16.

The drivers kept things exciting in Q2 with Tsunoda showing incredible times, landing the time for the fastest first sector and Hulkenberg driving a miracle lap again, making it to Q3. Ferrari and McLaren also kept proving their strength, landing one great time after another. In Q2 we lost Gasly on P15, Albon on 14, Stroll on 13, Ocon on 12 and Perez, who was outqualified by Ricciardo with 0.011s, on 11, which surprised a lot of fans and reminded of his qualifying sessions last year.

The final round of qualifying was equally as fun as the other two. Verstappen and Norris topped their times, both landing times under 1:15:000. Verstappen landed on pole with 1:14:746 followed closely by Piastri, who then sadly received a grid penalty for impeding Magnussen during Q1 and dropped to p5, making way for Norris with 1:14:837. He was followed by the two Ferraris, Leclerc on 3 and Sainz on 4. Russel followed on 6, Tsunoda on 7, Hamilton on 8, Ricciardo on 9 and Hulkenberg on p10.

The grid for tomorrow’s race is set. But who knows what the race will bring for results? We will find out in less than 24 hours, so let’s stay thrilled!
