Beyond words - the emotional Grand Prix of Silverstone

Esther Kienapfel

Todays race awoke emotions beyond comprehension or words. Beside of incredible and thrilling racing, overtakes and pit stops, we witnessed another record being broken, as well as a tearful celebration of a victory earned deeply.

The race began with a brilliant start andmany position changes, the most important one being Verstappen overtaking Norris.

Russell established his lead throughout the first laps together with Hamilton while Verstappen seemed to struggle and ended up being overtaken by Norris in lap 15 and Piastri in lap 17. One lap further down Hamilton overtakes his teammate and gains lead of the Grand Prix, soon after however both Mercedes went off track giving McLaren driver Norris the chance to close the gap and overtake them one after one, gaining the lead of the Grand Prix in lap 20. In the same lap Piastri also overtook the both Mercedes.

During all of that action the first showers of rain started already giving all of us pounding hearts but the drivers handled it amazingly. Most of the drivers stayed out and decided against boxing, however a few drivers, for example Perez and Leclerc, switched to intermediates which ended up not being with it as the rain stopped again quickly.

The second rain shower arrived and during lap 27 the drivers started to go into the pits to switch to the Intermediates and tried to save their tyres as best as they could. During that time Piastri was in lead of the Grand Prix but McLaren pitted over two rounds causing him to lose several positions, which he could not make up for in the end.

On lap 34 Russell, who was chasing Verstappen for third, was forced to retire because of a supposed water system issue.

The rain didn’t last as long as expected and when the sun came out the drivers were forced to switch back onto the slips because of the quickly drying track.

Both Verstappen and Hamilton pitted before Norris and with him also having a poor pit stop Hamilton was able to claim the first position for himself, while Verstappen worked to catch up to Norris, who managed to still stay on second.

In lap 48 he finally overtook the Brite, getting up to the second place on the podium, a much more promising result than most of the race left us guessing.

With a lot of jittery nerves and nail biting the last rounds passed and Lewis Hamilton brought home his NINTH Silverstone win, doing something no one had done before him. His victory was filled with tears and words of wonder, joy and incredible gratitude from both Hamilton’s and the team’s side.

Verstappen took the second place for himself and Norris the third. Behind them followed Piastri on fourth, further away because of the teams mistake earlier in the race, and Sainz, who also brought home the point for the fastest lap, on p5. Hulkenberg brought back p6, an amazing result for Haas, followed by both Aston Martins, Stroll on 7 and Alonso on 8. They were followed by Albon on 9 and Tsunoda on 10.

As stated at the start I think we can all agree that this race was beyond words. No matter whose fan you were today you can only congratulate Lewis Hamilton on his incredible and beyond deserved win. Congrats Lewis!!
